Bernard Porter drives through an open gate and onto a dirt road that winds through his fields. The pasture is pockmarked with mesquite. Their twisted twigs provide scant relief from the sun, and their roots leach precious water.

Bernard stops the truck and eases out. At 82, he’s been working this land since he was old enough to toddle onto his daddy’s fields and help pick the cotton crop.

His father, Elmer Porter, was a farmer and rancher in Pelham. His grandfather, William Porter, was a cotton farmer here. And his great-grandfather, Squire Porter, was a slave who married Margaret Caruthers, also a slave. Bernard knows this land, every knoll and hollow, cottonwood grove, dry wash and hole in the creek where the catfish hide. He knows the land as well as his own family history.

Bernard’s father, Elmer, was a hard-working farmer always thinking of new ways to make money. “The young boys weren’t allowed to stay at the home. We had to go to the field with the mules. We’d help bale hay. We had an old-timey hay press.”

He’d ride the mule hitched to the press, binding the hay into bales that weighed about 60 pounds. “If we didn’t bale the hay,” Bernard says, “we’d have to drag the bales back to the barn.”

During the Depression, food lines were a common sight in big cities — but not in Pelham. “We never did see a hungry day,” Bernard says. “We raised most of our food. We didn’t have much clothes and money, but we had food.”

The typical farmer grew cotton, corn and a grain. The corn was fuel — it went to feed the horses and mules that pulled the plows. Grain was used to make bread. Cotton paid the bills.

After the cotton was planted, everyone, young and old alike, went to the fields to chop the weeds with a hoe and make sure the plants thrived. When harvest rolled around, teams of four would pick the cotton, six rows at a time. One, usually the youngest, would sit on the wagon and drive the mule. The others worked the rows on either side and behind the wagon, all under the late summer sun. The work was dirty and tedious, hard on the knees and the back.

“You could come here on an early spring morning, and there’d be 30 or 40 people out in the field and everybody’d be working. Then you’d stop and get still,” Bernard says. “And you would hear one of those boys singing one of those old blues songs. Make tears come in your eyes.”

“The latest quarter — we’ve taken the sample and we’re waiting for the results,” he said. “We won’t add the chloramine until we have to.”

Pilachowski said he has everything he needs to make the change when the time comes.

Opposition to chloramine was motivated by claims about health problems supposedly linked to the chemical in other water systems using it. After a discount from the shoe store, the Assistance League of North Coast paid more than $1,000 for all the shoes, and league members brought the socks and toiletries along themselves.

Every Wednesday during the school year, they will do it all again.

Called “Footsteps,” the shoe program is just one of the charitable activities, mostly for children, sponsored by the League, according to Judy Vernoy, vice president of philanthropic programs for the group.

In fact, she said, 14 of 15 League programs deal with children.

They also provide school uniforms — three pairs of pants and three polo shirts — “so they (children) will look good to go to school and feel good,” said league member Nancy Walters,

The league covers Oceanside, Carlsbad and Vista, but Vernoy said fewer schools in Carlsbad qualify for shoes by having students below the poverty level.

A local teacher is heading to Washington this week to give a presentation on how her school uses technology to get kids moving.

Wendy Starwalt, a physical education teacher at Carrie Busey Elementary in Savoy, will give a presentation Friday at Michelle Obama's second Let's Move in School Showcase.

She'll do it with the help of Olympic sprinters Carl Lewis and Tyson Gay and some area students.

The students, like Carrie Busey students, will wear special watches that track their activity. Then, Starwalt can download information about that activity and illustrate it using a special kind of software.

Each watch is called an Active, and it's made by a company called Polar. Starwalt bought 30 watches with grant money from Fuel Up to Play 60, a program sponsored by the National Dairy Council and NFL to encourage students to make healthy choices.

Starwalt rotates the watches to different classes — about 400 children attend Carrie Busey — and they wear them day and night for four days.

"It is a big deal," Starwalt said, when students get the chance to wear them.

Animated figures on the watches indicate what a student is doing, whether it's sitting, standing or moving. Nebraska voters consider four ballot measures

Nebraskans will decide whether to enshrine hunting and fishing in the state constitution, let lawmakers serve longer and earn more money, and whether to make it a little easier to impeach officials.

I recently attended two conferences devoted to the state of women's sports. In fact, both conferences in many ways engendered more questions than answers.

As I sat through these two conferences and reflected on the gains that girls' and women's sports have made over the past 40 years, and the work that remains to be done, I tried to imagine what form progress will take going forward. To that end, I jotted down a few outcomes I'd like to see happen during the "next phase."

Some of the items on my wish list have to do with the creation and growth of new or existing women's sports properties. Others speak to the influence of women in the sports industry and their assumption of leadership positions in major sports organizations, particularly those that have a direct stake in women's sports programs.

The time required for these developments to occur would be anyone's guess; it could be five years, 10 years, 20 years or another 40 (and some might never come to pass at all, although the optimist in me hopes otherwise). Describing how each of the outcomes might be achieved, what people or groups would be needed to pull them off and how long it might take in order to see results in each case would likely require several more columns. In a few cases, the results might not even be quantifiable, although improvements would probably be easy to discern.

Special teams has been a sore spot for Kansas University football coach Charlie Weis this season.

Weis agreed with Bourbon in saying special teams often came down to guys making plays. But he held his coaching staff accountable for at least part of KU’s poor performance thus far.

“Let’s not just blame it on the players,” Weis said. “Because the easiest thing to do is just take the players and throw them under the bus and say, ‘Yeah, it’s all their fault; we put them right in the right spot and they just didn’t make a play.’ Now to be honest with you, there are times that you just have to go make the play. And there are things schematically that you can try to do to put people in a better position to make a play, so it’s a combination of the two.”
