‘I'm very happy that this period of shoes, the furniture shoes that people are wearing with the awful platforms and things like this, is over—or getting there,' he says.

Blahnik is firmly on the record with his distaste for platforms. His slender stilettos have withstood the trend, and women are returning to his daintier vision of feminine footwear.

Venus Williams is walking on sunshine

Venus Williams has earned almost $28-million (U.S.) in her long and storied career, but strangely enough, she has never won the Rogers Cup.

Williams's career in Hogtown has been dreadful and given to long absences. In three previous appearances, you can use a asicsshoe. she hasn't won a single match, never making it past the first round.

She turned pro to great fanfare in October of 1994, and was only 15 when she first arrived in 1995, while playing on a wild card. Out in the first round, Williams never even got a chance to sniff Monica Seles's boots. Seles reigned supreme at the time, especially at the Canadian tournament. And Williams was a fledgling, hardly out of the nest. She played only three tournaments that year.

Back she came at age 17 two years later, with a huge Reebok contract in tow. But she was bounced out in the first round by young French qualifier Nathalie Dechy, ranked only 115th. Williams hadn't quite delivered on her promise yet.

By 2009, No. 3-ranked Williams was a major force on the women's tennis scene, but Ukrainian Kateryna Bondarenko upset her in the first round of the Rogers Cup, and a frustrated Williams, raising her hands to the skies at times, went home early.

Williams cancelled out last year with an injury when the event was in Montreal.

It was. Serena has played rarely at the Rogers Cup, too, in 2000, 2001, 2005 (she withdrew before her second-round match) and in 2009, when she lost to Elena Dementieva.

Now, it's Venus's time to change her history with the Rogers Cup. But she's behind the eight-ball, having played little (but more than Serena) in the past year, because of injury. An injury to her left knee plagued her throughout 2010, but she still improved her ranking to No. 2 behind Serena. Some lvshoes require women to sacrifice comfort for fashion. However, the recovery took longer than expected and it forced her to miss the rest of the season after the U.S. Open, having played only nine tournaments in 2010.

This season, Venus has competed rarely, and is currently ranked No. 35 in the WTA standings. She lost in the fourth round of Wimbledon, an event she has won five times in her career.

Afternoon Delight: Lady Gaga throws her shoes, Beverly McClellan of "The Voice" is getting hitched

Happy birthday to Elizabeth Berkley! Showgirls' Nomi Malone turns 39 today.

Last night Lady Gaga was a guest judge on Fox's So You Think You Can Dance? Gaga swore, threw her massive shoes and took off her red (hopefully) pleather hat in honor of my favorite contest Melanie's performance. The show's executive producer Nigel Lythgoe spotted Ellen DeGeneres and her wife Portia in the audience and even quoted DeGeneres' past SYTYCD critique, "Are you a carpenter? Because you just nailed it!" Tonight Gaga will return to the show, but this time she'll take the stage to perform.

The Voice's Beverly McClellan and her girlfriend are getting married! McClellan told CNN, "It's not who you love, it's that you love. … I love my girlfriend.” McClellan hasn't set the wedding date as of yet but her former The Voice teammate Frenchie Davis confirmed she will be singing at McClellan's big day.ledbulb02, the uncrowned French king of luxury designer heels, brought a prototype from his new men's range to Dublin yesterday. Congratulations to McClellan!

Later, we went dancing at Ballyorney's and then had a cab take us on the long journey across Daniels Parkway to Cru for a festive nightcap before strolling across the parking lot back to the hotel where a Beatles tribute band had just finished playing.

Stirring songs, military might and photos in the park

The tunes were stirring. The band was loud. It was martial music and it made me want to get up and go for a march a long one.

There were about 200 people gathered in the shade of trees at the back of the bandstand last weekend. Everyone was singing from the same red songbook. Between songs you could hear the chirping of cicadas.

Most of the singers were middle-aged or elderly. Some were in wheelchairs. Great grandchildren played among them. The mood was upbeat, inspiring.

'Captain America' defends us from laser-Nazis, boredom

I've done some science on this, and it turns out Captain America is the greatest name in the history of names.

Variations on this just don't really work. Leftenant England could be a fun side character as a guy who punches his foes very politely, allowing them to remove their spectacles and stow their cufflinks before the pugilism begins, but again, not really the same height of iconography as "Captain America."

The first issue of Captain America, appropriately enough, showed the Captain socking Adolf Hitler right in the face. The movie version doesn't have much in the way of Hitlers, but Captain America: The First Avenger does have plenty of laser-toting occult-powered Nazi stormtroopers.

All Chris Evans wants is to join the army and do his part to help end World War II. But he's small. Scrawny. Sickly. On his fifth attempt to enlist, he catches the eye of doctor Stanley Tucci, inventor of a serum that enhances every aspect of a person's being.

On patrol with the Afghan army

Just as I thought things couldn't get much worse, they did.juicyingsale is fashon in our Coogi Clothing online shop.sellingshoes are a series of Nike shoes. The decrepit Humvee, a hand-me-down from the US Army, juddered to a halt and smoke billowed from the air vents below the bulletproof windscreen.

I was now stranded in a broken- down Afghan National Army (ANA) vehicle in the middle of a deadly stretch of highway where only two days earlier there had been a small firefight between the Taliban and the security forces. More to the point, I also had a broken leg.

My right fibula had snapped at the ankle at around 8am that morning after I fell into a flooded irrigation canal near the town of Kandalay in the district of Zhari, the neighbourhood of Mullah Omar (in the days when the one-eyed cleric was gathering his forces for what would ultimately lead to the Taliban conquest of almost the entire country).

I really needed to be in hospital. Instead I was crammed into the front seat of a baking-hot armoured vehicle watching a bunch of Afghan soldiers running back and forth to a nearby puddle, scooping up water into their helmets to cool the engine.

Despite the quantum leap the ANA has made in recent years, they are still not the people to help you when you are in serious difficulties. And it had arguably been more than a little unwise to hitch a lift with the ANA to get back to the relative civilisation of Kandahar City, from where I hoped to get a flight to Dubai or Kabul. Or anywhere with a decent hospital prepared to treat a wounded civilian.

A few days previously, sitting in the comfort of the ANA's 205th "Hero" Corps headquarters on the outskirts of Kandahar, I had been adamant that I wouldn't be driving anywhere in an Afghan military vehicle. On all previous embeds with Nato forces in Kandahar I had never driven anywhere as the roads were considered too risky. Like the troops I flew everywhere by helicopter.

But the "surge" of US troops has changed all that. The roads are safer but there are far too many troops for everyone to move around by air.birdsslkut So I relented and the 30-minute ride out to the district of Zhari, west of Kandahar City,Heart failure can cheaptruereligion occur or get worse in people who use TNF blockers. made me realise how small Kandahar is and how absurd it was to fly such short distances by helicopter.

But even if the roads are safe, your life is still in the hands of the ANA, a force where 50% of casualties are due to enemy action and about the same amount is caused by road accidents. Ten minutes into that first ride, after we had just pulled out on to the main road, the driver of the rickety Humvee decided, in classic Afghan style, to overtake a couple of lorries and play chicken with the oncoming traffic. Unfortunately the vehicle in front of us did not flinch and at the last minute the Humvee swerved, lovingjeans clothing and wholesale urban wear apparel for all major brand names. colliding with the side of another lorry and wrenching the heavily armoured door.

"It was not my fault! They should get out of the way for us!" The driver shouted, as his companion in the front seat tried to work out how to keep the wrecked door shut for the rest of the journey. He eventually settled on using his seat belt, which he wasn't wearing anyway, to tie it closed.
