Speedway goes to great (or not-so-great) lengths to draw a crowd

And then there was one.

That's the number of NASCAR Sprint Cup races that will be taking place each year at Auto Club Speedway in Fontana. And that's why speedway officials are going all-out in their attempt to make their one featured race of 2011 a great one.

In previous years, the speedway had two big NASCAR weekends (one in the winter and one in the fall), but due to declining attendance, the local track was stripped of its fall event. That was unfortunate for many reasons, but particularly because last October's competition was widely regarded as one of Fontana's very best races because it had been reduced to a 400-mile length.

Seeking a repeat of that thrilling race, speedway officials recently announced that the upcoming March 27 event is also being shortened from 500 to 400 miles.

It's impossible to ignore the on-track excitement we experienced at Auto Club Speedway in October, as a result of NASCAR reducing the Chase race from 500 to 400 miles," said ACS President Gillian Zucker. "We're confident the newly remileaged Auto Club 400 will continue the momentum we have been experiencing and that March's race will be the most exciting ever at Auto Club Speedway."

In October, Tony Stewart edged Clint Bowyer by 0.466 seconds, marking one of the closest races ever recorded at Fontana. The intense side-by-side racing elicited rave reviews from many observers — including Stewart, who declared: "The restarts early in the race were out of control. We were five wide!"

IN ADDITION to offering the shortened race, speedway officials are hoping to draw more fans by putting together a bunch of rather unique ticket offers.

In the past, the speedway has given race fans who purchased tickets on "Ticket Tuesdays" such goodies as zucchinis, inflatable life jackets vests are very lightweight and easy to wear over thick clothing without limiting mobility. pirate hats, and pizzas, all in an effort to help celebrate zucchinis, pirate hats and pizzas — all in an effort to recognize "National Days" like "Sneak a Zucchini onto Your Neighbor's Porch Day," "Talk Like a Pirate Day" and "National Pizza with Everything (Except Anchovies) Day.A man was put under citizen's arrest for attempting to fight the inflatable bouncers rentals at Dan's Irish Sports Bar."

This year,Today we are going to be taking a look at the latest sneaker like that, this is the new nike air max 90 in Black, Yellow and Orange. speedway officials have acknowledged that some fans considered these offers to be "dumb" (and that's putting it nicely). And so, specifically for these types of fans, the "Ticket Tuesdays" in January (including the one on Jan. 25) are celebrating "National Nothing Day" (which was held on Jan. 16) by offering people an opportunity to buy $35 tickets and get absolutely nothing (except, of course, the ticket they purchase).

But then in February and March, the speedway will return to its practice of offering a little something extra for people purchasing tickets:

. February is "National Plum Pudding Day (12), National Gum Drop Day (15), National Chocolate Mint Day (19),Today, I want to show you their leather phone cases. National Tortilla Chip Day (24), National Pistachio Day (26) and National Surf and Turf Day (29). If you celebrate this month correctly, you're definitely going to have stomach issues, and so the speedway is here to help. Purchase a ticket to the Auto Club 400 and you will receive an antacid for your possible bloating, indigestion and gas.

. Extraterrestrial Abductions Day is March 20, and there's no doubt UFOs and space aliens will be out in full force looking to abduct humans. For those of you who don't duck, dodge or hide well enough or for those who forget to put on their protective anti-alien amulet, you can purchase a ticket on any Tuesday in March and you'll receive a three-in-one — compass, whistle and light — to help you find your way back from Mars, Jupiter or wherever it is you disappeared to ..More popular is through tee shirt statement ed hardy shirts.. and strangely reappeared from.

And by the way, fans should bring the space aliens back with them to watch the race and boost attendance.

Getting a look at lawmakers' income

Dominick Ruggerio wears two hats as the new Senate majority leader — a part-time job that pays $13,962 a year and the $190,246-a-year administrator of a Providence-based arm of the Laborers International Union of North America that pursues public and private contracts for labor-friendly construction companies.

Sen. Frank Ciccione wears more than two hats as a top-tier official in the Laborers union and newly appointed chairman of a Senate Government Oversight Committee that has, in the past,More popular is through tee shirt statement ed hardy shirts.Adventurer Ben Fogle tests four hi-tech jackets to beat the freeze I've tried dozens of winter jacket over the years. investigated the state's growing reliance on contract employees to do work previously done by full-time state employees.

Ruggerio's compensation as administrator of the New England Laborers Labor-Management Cooperation Trust is reflected in the annual report that his employer — and any other public employee union, corporation or advocacy group with a lobbyist at the State House — is required to file with the secretary of state's office by Jan. 15 of each year.

But Ciccone's pay and benefits as the president and field representative of the Rhode Island Laborers District Council representing about 10,000 state, local and private sector workers in Rhode Island and business agent for one of its affiliates went unreported again this year.

The reason? Until this year, the labor groups that employ him did not have their own distinct, registered lobbyist at the State House, and so no reporting of how much they paid him was required under the state law intended to expose the financial relationships between lawmakers and lobbyists.

Ciccone makes no secret of how much his two union jobs are worth to him.

His dual roles with the Laborers District Council paid him $104,073 in wages last year. His $186,076-compensation package included another $61,247 in contributions on his behalf to the Laborers health, legal annuity and pension funds, $2,668 for life insurance, the $14,213 lease of vehicle and the payment of $1,358 in insurance and $2,517 in gas-card charges, according to information provided Monday by Gina Sabitoni-Arakelian,Mirazozo, created by Architects of Air is a large scale inflatable tent sculpture has been erected in the forecourt of the Sydney Opera House. administrative assistant for both Local 808 and the district council.

Ciccone was paid another $18,361 last year as the business manager for the Laborers' affiliate known as Local 808, Rhode Island Judicial, Professional and Technical Employees, with his union making another $6,240 contribution to the LIUNA local union pension fund on his behalf, and paying $1,547 in cell-phone charges, according to the information that Ciccone voluntarily approved for release.

But his situation demonstrates the blind spot in the state law aimed at bringing to light anything of value — including meals, trips, gifts, consulting fees and salaries — that any group with a keen interest in the decisions made at the State House gives a state lawmaker.Larger pets need to be checked and require a large pet carrier non-collapsible carrier and easy access to water.

The law was adopted in a spasm of reform after former North Providence Sen. John Celona was caught playing "senator-for-hire" and sent to jail.

As of Monday, about 250 of the 276 corporations, labor unions and other interest groups with registered lobbyists last year had met the deadline for filing the annual reports, including the lobbyists for the gambling interests who were a ubiquitous presence in the State House corridors last year during their failed attempt to get an election-year referendum on turning the state's two slot parlors into full-fledged casinos. None reported having given anything of value to any top state decision-maker or lawmaker.

And there is no evidence in any of the reports that have streamed in so far that any group with a stake in the lawmakers' decisions hosted a "legislative reception" for the lawmakers, or took even He may also be wearing black Nike shox runners.one of them out to a pricey lunch or dinner.

But the reports cast some light on the intersection between public and private lives of the state's lawmakers and lobbyists. Among the highlights:

The United Way reported $66,505 in salary payments to Sen. Beatrice Lanzi, D-Cranston. She is the organization's director of labor community services.

The Audubon Society of Rhode Island reported the $9,584.75 expense of a "reception & dinner" at Local 121, the Providence restaurant owned by state Sen. Joshua Miller, D-Cranston.

Amid the perennial debate about how much the tax-exempt colleges and universities in Providence pay the city in lieu of taxes, Johnson & Wales University reported four "payroll" payments totaling at least $3,416 to then-House Majority Leader and current House Speaker Gordon D. Fox, D-Providence; at least $13,507 to state Rep. Patricia Serpa, D-West Warwick; $8,400 to former Rep. Scott Pollard, D-Foster; and another $2,250 to an unidentified "Colleen A. Callahan."

A previous article explained Haiti's long colonial history, repeated below through Baby Doc's 1986 ouster.

Besides oppressive centuries under Spanish and French rule, colonialism cursed Haiti after revolutionary leader's Jean-Jacques Dessalines' 1806 assassination. Presidents drafted and abolished constitutions at will. From 1949 - 1859, "Emperor" Faustin I suspended Haiti's republic. Debt to France hamstrung the country. Governments controlled agricultural lands. Elites held power directly or through puppet presidents, serving them.Adventurer Ben Fogle tests four hi-tech jackets to beat the freeze I've tried dozens of winter jacket over the years.

Coups and assassinations were commonplace. Once the presidential palace was blown up, killing the incumbent. An angry mob hacked another to death. A third was poisoned. Relative stability was rare. America withheld recognition until 1862, during the Civil War under Lincoln.

After President Vilbrun Guillaume Sam's assassination, US marines occupied Haiti oppressively from 1915 - 1934 to secure America's business and imperial interests. Washington's man was made president, Phillippie Sudre Dartiguenave (1915 - 1922).

Richard Holbrooke's Empty Shoes

A sitting president, a former president, friends,More popular is through tee shirt statement ed hardy shirts. journalists and Democratic foreign policy types filled out the Kennedy Center Opera House in Washington, D.C., Friday to remember Richard Holbrooke, the diplomatic operator who died suddenly last month at the age of 69. And at the reception afterward, talk turned to the future of his last effort in government, the special office created at State to oversee Afghanistan and Pakistan.

For five weeks, the post of Special Representative held by Holbrooke until his death has gone unfilled. He may also be wearing black Nike shox runners. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, who wants to find a replacement, has considered a host of people without any success. "She's finding it very hard," says one official. I'm told that Nicholas Burns, the former career diplomat who was number three in Condi Rice's State Department under President George W. Bush, rebuffed an approach, citing his wife's health problems.

Some other names in the mix are Ryan Crocker, the former ambassador to Iraq during the surge, and Ambassador Anne Patterson, who served until recently in Pakistan. Both are a career foreign service officers. Mr. Crocker, who looked exhausted after Iraq, went into academia and may not want another tough job so soon. Ms. Patterson is seen as too close to Pakistan for some Afghans' comfort. Other potential candidates hold lucrative jobs in the private sector, and this post comes with a big pay cut, crammed offices next to the first floor State cafeteria and lots of travel to hard places.Larger pets need to be checked and require a large pet carrier non-collapsible carrier and easy access to water.

The Holbrooke job must seem like a poisoned chalice. Whoever takes it has a small chance of walking away covered in laurels. And any progress will likely be slow. Holbrooke was frustrated at many turns in the region and back in Washington. White House officials like former National Security Adviser Jim Jones undermined him, and President Obama never fully embraced him. He sparred with Afghan President Hamid Karzai. The job was also specially created for Holbrooke, a larger-than-life figure. Mrs. Clinton wants to keep the staff he assembled together in one office, but many of those people joined to work for Holbrooke and have other options.

The one prominent figure in Afghan policy almost certainly ruled out of consideration is Karl Eikenberry, the current ambassador in Kabul. Appointed two years ago (partly at Holbrooke's urging) after a tour commanding allied forces in Afghanistan,Mirazozo, created by Architects of Air is a large scale inflatable tent sculpture has been erected in the forecourt of the Sydney Opera House. the retired lieutenant general has clashed with the Afghans, the U.S. military brass and State during his time there. He is expected to be moved out of Kabul this spring, though nothing has been announced yet.

Names mentioned as a replacement for him include Mr. Crocker and Frank Ruggiero, Holbrooke's deputy and the current acting special envoy. David Petraeus, the senior U.If you are really space deprived and don't have a sofa bed, today's inflatable mattress bed are a great “bed in a pinch.S. military commander in Afghanistan, and Mr. Eikenberry aren't close. Gen. Petraeus wants to have "someone at the Embassy he can talk to," says one official, someone like Mr. Crocker in Baghdad. But recreating the "Petraeus-Crocker show" from Baghdad in Kabul may be a step too far for the White House -- assuming Mr. Crocker would even agree to go back into the field.

The coming months will see new faces in other jobs overseeing the war. Secretary of Defense Robert Gates says he's leaving this year. Adm. Mike Mullen, the chairman of the joint chiefs, finishes his term at summer's end. The uncertainty comes as a beefed up American force is in the midst of a critical fighting season in Afghanistan.

Recognize sufferings of Coptic Christians

While this might not be on the hearts of most people in the South Brunswick/Princeton area, on New Year’s Eve over 20 Coptic Christians were killed when a car bomb exploded outside of their church in Egypt. Nearly 100 others were injured. The horror isn’t only that they were killed after celebrating church services in peace,If you are really space deprived and don't have a sofa bed, today's inflatable mattress bed are a great “bed in a pinch. but that this has been an ongoing pattern of suffering for this minority religion in an Islamic country.

Today, there were rumors of threatened attacks hitting more close to home in Coptic churches throughout the New Jersey area so that many churches ended their spiritual services, that typically run on the Coptic Christmas eve of Jan. 6, earlier than normal in an effort to protect the congregation from another incident if the threats turned out to be true.It is an email notification service that notifies buyers about the recent additions to the used inflatable boats for sale available with the company.

It should also be noted that the above mentioned incident that happened on New Year’s Eve occurred after a similar threat was made.
For most of the past 1300 years, the Coptic church has suffered in silence. And while other atrocities around the world may sometimes drown out the tears of these Coptic mothers and fathers and brothers and sisters, I think it’s time for a change.there was this inflatable swimming pools filled with water, it was the magic that this pool was suddenly there. Exceptionalism, Faith and Freedom: Palin's America

Exceptionalism, Faith and Freedom: Palin's America

In her Facebook reflections on the events in Arizona, Sarah Palin observes that our government was not designed for "perfect men and women." It is because we are not angels, she says , that we require a system of government that acknowledges "the inevitable conflicts" produced by our "imperfect passions" and yet provides mechanisms — free speech, vigorous debate — that allow us to settle those conflicts without resorting to "dueling pistols." That, she declares,Mirazozo, created by Architects of Air is a large scale inflatable tent sculpture has been erected in the forecourt of the Sydney Opera House. is the system the Founders designed, and it is part of "why America is exceptional," an assertion she makes twice.

This mixture of Calvinist pessimism and unabashed patriotism is writ large in Palin's recent book, "America by Heart: Reflections on Family, Faith, and Flag." The book opens with a celebration of Frank Capra's Jefferson Smith, the hero of "Mr. Smith Goes to Washington" (1939). Smith (played by Jimmy Stewart) is an accidental senator who finds his idealism mocked and blocked by corrupt politicians, greedy industrialists and propagandistic newspapers. The climax of the movie is Smith's filibuster, in the course of which he cites the Declaration of Independence, written by his namesake, Thomas Jefferson. At this moment Smith embodies Capra's typical hero — a man who draws his strength from an internal reservoir of virtue, a man who refuses to deed his integrity to some impersonal structure of government or business, a man who is, above all, free.

It is such men who in Capra's films at once represent and inspire grass-roots movements in which decent, average people come together not at the behest of a charismatic leader or a corporation, but at the behest of an idea. For Smith that idea is to love thy neighbor, and it has led him to propose the establishment of camps for homeless boys to be paid for by private contributions and not by the state. In "Meet John Doe," the reluctant hero (played by Gary Cooper) is a free-spirit hobo whose words (written for him by Barbara Stanwyck) inspire the formation of John Doe clubs dedicated to justice and the spreading of good-neighbor citizenship. In "Mr. Deeds Goes to Town," the title hero (again played by Gary Cooper ) resolves to give away an inherited fortune by offering 10-acre farms to down-and-out families who agree to work them. In "State of the Union," an industrialist-turned-politician (played by Spencer Tracy) withdraws from a presidential contest because he will not be owned by or beholden to a party; he wants to speak in his own voice.

In each of these films the forces of statism, corporatism and mercantilism are routed by the spontaneous uprising of ordinary men who defeat the sophisticated machinations of their opponents by declaring, living and fighting for a simple basic creed of individualism, self-help, independence and freedom.

Does that sound familiar? It should.Chanelle Hayes Chanelle Hayes hit the streets in Christian Louboutin Maggie pumps. It describes what we have come to know as the Tea Party, which famously has no leaders, no organization, no official platform, no funds from the public trough.Shoppers can use the feature to see what they look like wearing various styles of ed hardy sunglasses.Larger pets need to be checked and require a large pet carrier non-collapsible carrier and easy access to water. Although she only mentions the Tea Party briefly in her book, Palin is busily elaborating its principles, first in the lengthy discussion of Capra's Jefferson Smith and then, at the end of the same chapter, in an equally lengthy discussion of Martin Luther King. These two men (one fictional, one real) are brought together when Palin says that King's dream of an America that lived out "the true meaning of its creed" would be, if it were realized, "the fulfillment of America's exceptional destiny." A belief in that destiny and that exceptionalism is, she concludes, "a belief Senator Jefferson Smith would have agreed with." In the spirit of full disclosure, I myself became a believer in American exceptionalism the first time I visited Europe, in 1966.

Exceptionalism can mean either that America is different in some important respect or that, in its difference, America is superior. Palin clearly means the latter:

"When we say America is exceptional we're saying we are the lucky heirs to a unique set of beliefs and national qualities" and that we are "a model to the world.Today we are going to be taking a look at the latest sneaker like that, this is the new nike air max 90 in Black, Yellow and Orange." She finds support for her assertion n in the writings of de Tocqueville ("The position of the Americans [is] quite exceptional"), Crevecoeur ("What then is the American, this new man?"), John Winthrop ("We shall be as a city upon a hill; the eyes of all people are upon us"), Frederick Jackson Turner (the frontier "produced a new product that is American"); and she might also have cited Emerson, Woodrow Wilson and the many Puritans who proclaimed that they were building a "New Jerusalem" on the American shores.

It is easy to see from these references that the claim of exceptionalism has a source in religion, specifically in the tradition of translatio imperii, the idea that empire and faith are traveling westward. In 1633 the English poet George Herbert announced that "religion stands on tip-toe in our land, / Ready to pass to the American strand," where it would "draw more near" to the last judgment and the second coming of Christ.

Lineup confusion leaves crowd worried

By noon, it seemed there were more people waiting to attend the memorial service that President Barack Obama will be attending than McKale Center could accommodate. No one is certain how many people will be allowed in to the building, though the arena seats 14,500.

Many people formed a line along Campbell Avenue at around 8 a.m., but were moved by police. A line was then formed from McKale Center heading northbound on Cherry Avenue, wrapping around the corner to Second Street, breaking at every intersection so as to not block the street. It continued northbound down Warren Avenue, turned westbound at First Street and southbound down Mountain Avenue until people nearly reached the Student Union Memorial Center.

Kimberly Gyles, a pre-nursing freshman, had issues with being moved and not knowing where to go. "I got here at 10:30 a.m. and we were on Campbell, and people started running around. I ended up running around the block three times," she said. She sat on the steps near Cherry Avenue Parking Garage. Her friend Carly Hamman, a pre-education freshman, was also with her. "We're just waiting so we know if we're even going to get in."

Josh Hill, a volunteer working the program, was walking along the line of people that extends from the McKale Center all the way down Cherry Avenue to Speedway Boulevard. "Right now, we're saying no backpacks, no food or large items," he said. "We think they're allowing small handbags, but at this point we're saying no bags to make it easier." He and many other volunteers wearing red "Together We Thrive" shirts informed people of what they were not allowed to bring and helped keep crowds off the street. By 2:30 p.m., all red-shirted volunteers were warning people that no small handbags would be allowed after all, though they advised identification was required and a small camera would be permitted into the arena.

As the line of people inched closer to McKale Center, people were more wearied and upset. "We got moved like three times, nobody knows anything here." said Alan Chu,I don't have no Hermes ed hardy shoes. a graduate student seeking a doctorate in rhetoric. "The first 14,there was this inflatable swimming pools filled with water, it was the magic that this pool was suddenly there.000 are going in, according to what they say, and the rest are going there," Chu said, pointing to the Arizona Stadium, where the overflow of people will be seated so they can watch the memorial on large screens.

"We don't know when we're gonna move,For some time, women have bid farewell to the days when women handbags were just used for 'functional reasons'." said freshman Kennara Ramirez, a pre-business major. "We've been here for about 45 minutes in this same spot. And we're not going to the stadium. If we don't get into McKale its kind of pointless," Ramirez said as she sat on the corner of Cherry Avenue, wearing sunglasses in the sunny 73-degree weather. "I might as well go home."

"Personally, I think it is amazing that they're even putting this on in just two days. I'm excited. If I get in, I get in. If I don't,At some point the squire of Nike Jacket will be mentioned. then I go home and watch it on my TV," said M'Balia Thomas, a doctoral student in the Secondary Language Acquisition and Teaching program.

John Perrin, who was working as an administrative staff for "Together We Thrive" just outside of McKale Center, thinks they will only let about 12,000 people. "I'm not really sure, there may be a little more seats, since it's capacity is at about four (thousand)," he added.

Due to the memorial service, the Main Library will be closing at 3 p.m. and re-opening tomorrow, Jan. 13, at 7:30 a.m. The Student Recreation Center is also closing at 3 p.This inflatable products decoy is very lightweight and when deflated can be fit easily into your pack.m., as well as most restaurants and stores on campus. Ten Rules for Street Musicians

My relationship to groceries is directly related to how much I earn as a street musician. Since 2006, my primary means of feeding myself has been playing the cello on the streets and subway stations of New York, Paris and Boston. I moved to Boston in the fall of 2008 to study at Boston Conservatory and began exploring the ideal circumstances for generating the funds to feed my food habit.

This is what I’ve learned:

1. Day of week / Time of Day – I make two or three times more money on Friday mornings than Monday mornings. Friday afternoons are second best. On Mondays, it didn’t matter if it’s morning or lunch time, late afternoon or evening. It’s almost always bad. Tuesday morning is better than Wednesday morning although Wednesday afternoon is better than Tuesday afternoon. Thursday mornings aren’t so good but Thursday afternoons are. For the past two and a half years, I’ve played almost every Friday morning at the MGH (Massachusetts General Hospital) stop on the Red Line in Boston (between March and October) from 7:00 to 9:00 a.m.

2. How to prepare for my job - I get up about 6:00 a.m., eat a solid breakfast and listen to the Market Place Morning Report on National Public Radio while I drink a cup of coffee. I don’t follow the stock market. I’m not interested in it. Listening to Marketplace, I get the lowdown about something I don’t understand. If it’s up, then the money is much quicker. I don’t listen to the weather report, though. I’m groggy in the morning but I can tell the weather by looking out the window.

3. What to wear – For a while, I wore a large Cat in the Hat kind of hat. It was tall and silly. I was thinking, “Everybody is going to think this is the coolest hat and will give lots of money.” That hat works well if I’m going out at night to play pop music with a singer at a club. But during the morning commute playing top 40 classical arias for cello, people were really weirded out by that hat. I didn’t wear that hat after I figured it out. I dress respectably but not too nice - somewhere between grungy and preppy. I wear brown leather suede shoes and dark pants. If it’s cold, I wear a sweater but tee shirts are fine. People don’t need to see a collar.

4. Eye contact - Eye contact is essential. I don’t wear sunglasses or a large brimmed hat. There’s not a lot of eye contact in the commuting world at rush hour. When Joshua Bell played at a stop on the Washington D.C. metro in 2007, he wore a Washington Nationals baseball cap.it's because men have gotten to the naive nature that a t-shirt and some coogijeansblog will always be safe. I’d never tell Mr. Bell how to play the violin but I bet he would have made more money (he earned $32 and change in 43 minutes of playing – not bad) if he hadn’t worn a hat.

5. Location - The Charles/MGH Station is best for me as a solo cellist. It’s big, open and glassy, kind of like a greenhouse. I feel happy there so my music is probably better. I’ve played a few different places in Boston. There’s another stop deep underground in East Boston with a lot of Central American riders. I played there at night with a guitar player who lived for several years in Guatemala and knows lots of their pop songs and traditional music. Almost no one plays at this stop because riders have less money. We’re playing traditional and popular music these folks know and they eat it up. If I went there and played what I play at Charles/MGH, I wouldn’t do as well.

6. Competition - Once I showed up at the Harvard Square stop before 7:00 a.m. and wasn’t able to get a spot because other musicians were already set up. I came back another day and found an empty spot. I start to play and another street musician with a guitar comes up and said, “Did you guys do the lottery this morning?” I said, “There was space. I started playing.Just like Madonna, who grabs the spotlight in her Chinese dress and lv shoes.” He said, “Usually we show up before 7 and flip a coin to see who goes first.” I don’t know what’s true.A blue line max train has been evacuated while the bomb squad investigates a suspicious device, officers say. Street musicians talk a lot of sh–. I don’t go Harvard Square anymore because people who play there are so territorial. And the money isn’t as good for me.

7. Selection of music / Weather - In June of 2009, it seemed as if it rained almost every day in Boston. It felt biblical how much it rained. People were wet and down. I looked for good rainy day music. You have to find the right tune for the right day. If it’s been raining for one day or 20, it will be a different song every day. Once I find the right song, I’m happy to play the same song over and over again on the same day. I won’t play it back-to-back but will play it guilt-free more than once the same day. One good rainy day tune is an aria from a Bach violin sonata. It sings. It’s pretty emotional. It’s an aria so it feels vocal. If you find the right piece for a rainy day, you can get to the heart of people’s rainy day emotions. Then people throw money down.

8. Bad situations – One day, two guys come up. They’re older and bigger than me. One shows me a handful of change and says, een retailer abercrombiefitchl0lz Co. was one of the biggest winners in December. “You’ve got lots of ones. Do you mind if I exchange coins for your bills?” I say, “No, please don’t. I don’t need change.” He says, “What’s the problem? Money’s money.” I tell him, “Exactly, so why do you need my bills? So, please don’t.” They keep giving me a hard time. I say to them,Trey was last seen wearing a black hoodie and blue jeans. “Can you please just leave me alone? This is my workplace. Don’t bother me. I’m just trying to do my job.” The second guy says, “Well, you don’t want to know what my job is.” I say, “Just leave me alone.” I’m sitting. They’re standing. There’s one of me - two of them. I have an expensive cello. It’s risky taking it out in front of people because you don’t know if some wack job is going to want to put their foot through it. Especially some wack job who’s up close and mad at you. Anyway, they left in a huff. That was the angriest anyone had ever been. But it was close.

9. Customer / audience demographics – Race and gender make no difference if someone is going to stop, listen and/or give me money. But it is very clear that young children are my best customers. They are the most interested. They don’t have money but their parents consistently give. If you can mesmerize a kid for two minutes, their parents are really happy. Babies in strollers - they brighten up. Walking age toddlers through 10 or 12 notice me almost all the time. Once they get in college, they start to get that cold adult thing. Seniors and elders, they are responsive. Younger and older people are in less of a rush. And they don’t wear headphones as much.

10. How to measure success - I leave business cards with my email address in my case so that people can contact me. One day was a bad day. Everybody was unhappy. I didn’t get much money. But when I got home, there was an email from a woman. She wrote, ”Every time I see you, it brightens my day.” Her expressing gratitude for what I do made up for how little money came in. Another day when I hadn’t even played on the subway, a different woman wrote a similar thing. That’s sweet. People are there to get on a train to go someplace else. It’s a big deal if they stop when there’s no train. It’s an even bigger deal if they are listening to me and their train comes in AND they stay to listen to me some more. When they applaud, that’s really sweet. A few times, people have stayed to listen to me play and two trains have come and gone. That means something.

FASHION Savvy sales shopping

Well, the blitz is on ladies, and now is your chance to grab some serious bargains. But think carefully before you lose the run of yourself and buy a load of rubbish because ‘they’re such bargains’.
I adore shopping. I could shop for Ireland.een retailer abercrombiefitchl0lz Co. was one of the biggest winners in December. The minute the sales start I’m out there.
However, I’ve made so many mistakes over the years and collected so many ‘orphans’ (clothes that went with nothing else) that I really had to rethink my strategy and learn to shop smarter. After all, who needs more wardrobe clutter?
So before you whip yourself into a shopping frenzy and start burning up the bit of plastic, here are a few tips.

Look at what you have in your wardrobe. Only buy something that will fit in with your existing clothes, in fact as a general rule I suggest you only ever buy something that will go with three items you already have.

When trying on clothes, make sure they feel comfortable, if you’re tugging and pulling at them in the dressing room leave them there. They won’t fit you any better at home.

Does the colour suit you? Some colours might look great under artificial lighting
but could end up making you look drained in natural light.

Do you need it? How many more pairs of black trousers or white tee shirts do you need? Work out your plan before you go shopping. A bargain is only a bargain if you need it and will wear it.

What about the fabric? Can you wash it or is it dry clean only. If you have to bring it to the cleaners after every wear then it’s false economy.

Wear comfy shoes but slip the good ones into your bag so that you can try them on with whatever you’re buying.

Don’t wear loads of clothes, as it will make trying on very difficult. I really hate all the lugging and hauling to the dressing room but it must be done otherwise you might end up returning everything.

If you’re unsure about something take the time to think about it. Go away and have a coffee or lunch – it will give you enough space to think straight and make a decision that’s not totally based on impulse.

I’m constantly learning from my clients. One young lady I met last week told me she prefers to save for something that excites her rather than endlessly purchasing ‘ok’ items.
She showed me a tiny Valentino bag that was to die for. She had watched it for ages and delayed the gratification until she had saved the €1,000 to afford it.Just like Madonna, who grabs the spotlight in her Chinese dress and lv shoes. But then again, if I added up all my cheapie bags and shoes it would add up to an awful lot of lolly. So who’s the smarter spender?
I think this will be the year of the discerning shopper. Here’s to a happy, healthy – and savvy – 2011!

Why Rob Ford can't save TTC: Granatstein

As you prepare to have your personal business rub up against six people trying to share one square foot on your crammed streetcar or subway ride in to work, here's the bad news: The money for the TTC is about to dry up.Most jeans123 are no longer made with organic cotton, but several lines are still sold at Kaight in New York.

And the 10 fare hike, whether it happens or not, isn't going to help one lick.

The TTC is facing a huge problem as it seeks $7.6 billion over the next 10 years to maintain and improve the transit system.

City staff have told the TTC to look elsewhere for $2.3 billion of that money. The hope is to give a purpose for buying our shirts. That it can't afford to keep borrowing for the TTC as the city hits its debt ceiling in 2014-2016.

What won't happen, TTC Chief General Manager Gary Webster said Monday, is a return to the pre-subway-crash days, where maintenance was deferred and the system was not kept in a state of good repair.

What will happen is anyone's guess.

All Webster promised is he'll dance around the question for the next six months as the TTC tries to find billions of dollars under subway seat cushions.

“As of next year, we can't pay any of our bills for capital,” Webster said.Good luck out there be safe and drive slowly. “That's a problem.”

Especially on a system that keeps getting more popular and more crowded, with record ridership numbers expected in 2011, despite fare increases, and customer service issues.

Part of the solution is praying the province and feds come back to the table and start pouring hundreds of millions more into the TTC.

But, with big deficits in Ontario and expected belt-tightening in Ottawa, the TTC better start breeding rabbits, because it'll need to pull a bunch out of its fantasy funding hats.

For now, you can expect proposed platform-edge doors in TTC subway stations to face the axe, as that's $1 billion the TTC doesn't have to spend.

For those of you who like to dream in subway trains, say goodbye to any talk of a downtown relief line.

But, more important, what happens to the regular replacement of aging subway trains beyond the TTC's first order? Or buses? Or tunnel repairs?

Webster said the normal order of buses for 2011 is no longer automatic.

The TTC has spent billions in the past few years to make up for lost time. This year, 57% of the city's $2.05 billion capital budget will go to the TTC — with $650 million on the TTC itself, another $510 million on the Spadina subway. Expect that number to grow for 2012, before it starts rolling downhill.

As a result, new subway trains, new low-floor streetcars and needed repairs will all happen for the Red Rocket.

But city leaders are clearly saying the TTC's needs can no longer swallow up the city, and crowd out other projects.

What now? What role will Metrolinx play in all this? Will Metrolinx even be on the favoured list of Tim Hudak if there's a change of power at Queen's Park in October?

The Transit City — now Transportation City, the most part the earnings from teen jobs tend to go towards clothes from abercrombiefitch. possibly Scarborough Subway — money isn't part of this discussion. It's a separate envelope, blogdetikjeans believe it or not.

What happens with those billions is expected to be up for discussion at the end of this month, when TTC staff report back.

The good news is this budget reflects reality. The TTC took out hundreds of millions of dollars of hope funding, money clearly not coming from other governments.

As for the fare increase, the TTC, on its own, has been talking for months with city staff about that.

It's a cost of doing business, when your costs continue to go up for things like staff and fuel, for a start.

In fact, while former TTC chairman Adam Giambrone didn't predict an increase in 2011, he factored in hikes of 15 in both 2012 and 2013, and a ride in 2014 and 2015.

So don't blame Rob Ford for screwing up transit. But don't look for him to fix anything, either.

Jack Black now has quite a bit of an exquisite house within his 6,500 square feet. He has a total of seven bedrooms, a swimming pool, and what is said to be a "killer view." The house was built in 1915 but has undergone many steps to modernize it in recent years, including the installation of solar panels on its roof.

Do you think Jack Black cleans all the toilets that grace the bathrooms attached to those seven bedrooms? Probably not. $6-million mansions must automatically come with maids!

Activists expelled for Gaza T-shirts

Eight people had worn black T-shirts with “NEXT YEAR IN JERUSALEM” printed on the front and “US BOAT TO GAZA” on the back. The writings were in English, Hebrew and Arabic.

The activists had worn the T-shirts on the final day of an exhibition at the Gagosian Gallery called “Next Year in Jerusalem,” in an effort to include an American boat in the next blockade-challenging aid convoy to break the Israeli siege on Gaza.

Half of the group had left when ordered to leave but the four refused to vacate the place and the police were called in to force the activists, who had tried to draw attention to their cause, to leave.

But according to witnesses, when one of the activists refused to go, she was pulled so roughly that she fell on the ground. The woman, who was in her late 50s, was dragged across the floor of two long rooms to the doorway. Police have denied the violence, The New York Times reported on Thursday.

The activists explained that they were part of an organization called "US Boat to Gaza," which plans to sponsor a ship in the next flotilla to sail against the Israeli blockade.

Game 31 Preview: Miami Heat vs. Houston Rockets

OK, so everyone hates the Miami Heat. It's pretty much a fact. Everyone hates LeBron James for copping out. They hate Chris Bosh for not wanting to be "The Man" somewhere. They hate Pat Riley for orchestrating the whole mess. They hate Miami fans for doing nothing to deserve the team they have. They hate every other Heat player for playing on a frontrunner. And they hate LeBron some more just for good measure.

I get that, and I agree with most of it. However, I thought it would be fun to preempt the inevitable cascade of "Miami Hate" comments below, I would pretend to be a LeBron supporter and play devil's advocate. It's surprisingly easy when you think about it objectively. So, here goes.

It makes perfect sense that LeBron would want out of Cleveland. It was awesome that he got to play in front of his home state. The fans there loved him, but the fans of any team would love to have a guy like LeBron. Fans in Cleveland believed that they helped make LeBron the player he is today. Bullshit. Hard work and freakish athleticism did that. Do the fans make nifty passes in transition? No, it's all him. Sure, LeBron said he wanted to bring a championship to Cleveland. So does everyone else, including one Tracy McGrady.

As for the cop out. Did LeBron ever say he wanted to be the best player ever? We wanted him to go for it, but saying that you're "The King" or "The Chosen One" doesn't translate to "Best Player of All Time" in my book. Dude had every right to go play for rings. Don't we criticize players for going for money instead of rings all the time? So LeBron went for money and rings. Sounds like the right move to me. Sounds like the guy just wanted to win 'ships, get paid, and move on with his life. I'm pretty sure he's well within his rights.

But he could have won rings in Cleveland, you say? As my friend Andre from "The League" would say, "Child please!" No, he couldn't have won in Cleveland. Look at the talent around him. I know Dan Gilbert tried to get him a sidekick. He worked hard at it, but failed multiple times. Larry Hughes? Antawn Jamison? Old Shaq? Mo Williams? If you believe any of those guys could be real number twos on a championship team, I want what you're smoking. LeBron was surrounded by third- and fourth-options and various role players during his time in Cleveland. I would argue that you can't do that anymore in the NBA. Name the last NBA team to win an NBA title with just one top 20 player. You can't count any of the Spurs teams (Duncan+Robinson/Ginobili/Parker), the Lakers (Kobe+Pau/Shaq), the recent Celtics (three stars at the time with KG running the defense and Pierce owning the O; they now have Rondo+three). The Pistons peaked like crazy, and Rasheed, Chauncey, and Rip played like top 20 players in that series. The Bulls always had Pippen to go with Jordan, and Hakeem had Drexler the second time around. So, if you guessed the namesake of this blog back in 1994 as the answer you're right.

A lot has changed since 1994. I hit puberty (OK, that's debatable), we declared war on terrorism, we elected a black man as president, we made small phones that connect to the internet, people who have no right being famous became plastered everywhere, vampires are in vogue, I have started to despise all things vampire, Harry Potter happened, and Lee got that red goatee thing going (OK, I don't really know when that started).

Last but not least, the NBA has changed. Teams need an alpha male and a secondary star. There are specific qualities that the second guy has to have. He has to be able to be the best player on a team and take them places. He has to be willing to concede to the alpha dog. And he has to have a really balanced skill set. In almost all the cases above, the "second guy" was usually the leader of the defense or was an exceptional overall player who was just one tiny step away from being a top 10 or top 5 player. Could Michael Jordan have won LeBron's Cavs? Maybe, but it's highly unlikely. People seem to forget that MJ didn't start winning championships until his seventh season. The guy didn't just figure everything out on draft night.

So what that LeBron wanted to play with his boys? How cool would it be to play in the NBA with your best friends, especially if all three of you are elite talents? Pretty damn awesome, I'd say. That's the dream. It's like Entourage where all five guys are actors and don't have clashing egos.

And who cares if he announced his decision on public television? He made $3 million for the Boys and Girls Club of America, which is a damn fine institution and I won't hear otherwise. Would I be OK with looking like a jerk on TV if it meant that a great non-profit organization made that kind of money? You're damn right I would.

Oh, and LeBron's Nike commercial was incredible. The production value was stellar. Whether or not you hate LeBron, you have to admit that his commercial was fantastic and creative. I've watched it a ton of times.

I'll argue other points as they come up. Let me know what you think in the comments. Please try to explain your reasoning. I know everyone wants to say "LeBron is a dick" and just be done with it, but I'm challenging you to be more eloquent today. And before the hate starts, remember that I said I'm just playing devil's advocate here. Please don't tar and feather me and run me out of town. I like it here.

Let's check out the matchups...

Madonna Sends Clothes, Autographs to Malawi Orphanage

Madonna Sends Clothes, Autographs to Malawi Orphanage

It was a very Madge Christmas for the 25,000 orphans in Malawi.

Madonna shipped boxes and bales containing toys, chocolate and sweets to six orphanages in the birth country of her adopted daughter, Mercy. Along with the goodies, the 52-year-old star included a handwritten note that read "To my Malawi children on Christmas and Boxing Day. I wish I was with you. See you soon, M."

Officials at Madonna's charity, Raising Malawi, distributed the items and other miniature Christmas cards signed by Madonna and children Lourdes, 14, and Rocco, 10. The notes read: "Mercy, David, Rocco, Lourdes and I send you a blessed Christmas to all of you!"

Also in the bales were new clothing and items that Madonna, Lourdes, Rocco and Mercy have outgrown and can no longer use, officials tell UsMagazine.com.

Madonna also threw an open-air party at Consol Homes, an orphanage near Lilongwe, the town where she teaches a Kabbalah spirituality class to children.

Over 1,000 people from the surrounding villages were invited to celebrate with the 2,500 orphans and underprivileged children.

"Madonna says she always enjoys the traditional dances the villagers perform for her when she visits," Yacinta Chapomba, director of Consol Homes, tells Us. "She asked us to invite as many villagers as possible for the Christmas party."
