All the items are gender-neutral, explains Mrozek, who agonizes over pre-teen fashion trends and fabric when choosing the clothes. She plays with every toy and makes sure they don't break.

Her shopping list is not so different from when the Santa Claus Fund was begun by Toronto Star founder Joseph Atkinson in 1906. Then the list included toys, nuts, candy and wool socks, as well as “the biggest, sweetest orange.”

The elves pack six days a week in October, assisted by volunteers like Allan Chard, a seven-year fund veteran just a month away from his 81st birthday.

All the unloading, carrying and sorting can be a strain on the back and hell on fingernails, but the atmosphere stays upbeat.

“We're doing this for the children,” says Mrozek. “We all know this could be the only gift the child receives at Christmas. This is for the families that need our help.”

The fund's administrative costs — things like renting the warehouse — are covered by the Star. All donations go straight to purchasing the gifts — this year's fundraising goal is $1.6 million.

The workshop is now entering the “shopping phase.” At the beginning of November, the elves receive application cards for gift boxes from Ontario Works and hundreds of social service agencies in Greater Toronto. They pick the right boxes for every family and personalize each with the child's name.

The sorted presents are then delivered to depots in the five cities covered by the fund. From there, volunteers take them right to the family's door.

It doesn't matter whether the family celebrates Christmas or not, says Cudney, the Star's former director of charities.

“It's about what that box represents. That someone was thinking about that child, packed that box and handed it to him or her.
