Computer giant Hewlett-Packard recently released
a low-cost server aimed at small and medium businesses looking to consolidate
their IT resources despite a limited budget.
Dubbed the HP ProLiant
MicroServer Gen8, HP’s latest offering for small businesses in the Philippines
is a small cube-type server that comes with a single server and up to four hard
disk drives, and was designed to fit on tabletops and small spaces inside the
office.
HP claims the MicroServer Gen8 is currently the smallest server

“The HP ProLiant MicroServer Gen8 is about half the size of
what competitors are offering, and has been purpose-built for microbusinesses,”
said Veronica Escalante, category manager for industry standard servers and
software at HP Philippines.
Escalante said the MicroServer Gen8 is the
perfect first-time server for SMEs contemplating on replacing standard white-box
PCs as their server setup. “The way we have built it ensures that it has passed
all the standard tests of quality and reliability,” she explained.
With
more than 90 percent of businesses in the Philippines considered as SMEs, HP
said it recognizes the vast potential of offering the MicroServer to
non-enterprise firms in the country.
Most of the time, Escalante said,
these SMEs lack financial and technical resources tomost popular Beads_Beads

offering hopes to address.
Aside from its compact form factor and
relatively affordable price point, HP touts the manageability features of the
MicroServer Gen8 in that SMEs wouldn’t need a dedicated IT person to deploy and

Among the manageability features include the
Intelligent Provisioning option, which allows SMEs to boot up and deploy the
MicroServer Gen8 easily. The Active Health System, meanwhile, monitors up to
1,600 parameters within the machine to alert for possible hardware and software
problems before they even occur.
“Additionally, with Insight Remote
Support, the server can send alerts to HP directly and automatically, so the
customer need not call HP anymore — we call them,” she added.
These
manageability features make the MicroServer Gen8 a standout against white-box PC
servers which SMEs would have to manage by themselves, Escalante added.
Aside from the MicroServer Gen8, HP also announced the local
availability of the MI310e Gen8 v2 server, which is ideal for multi-branch
deployments; and the DL320e Gen8 v2 server, a blade-type server that is ideal
for multiple rack deployments.
“SMEs are currently under pressure to
innovate and execute faster, and to drive out unnecessary costs,” Escalante
said. “Wise use of IT can address much of these pain points,A number of server10
