Two hope to replace longtime county judge
A career prosecutor and career public
defender seek to replace a mainstay on the Marion County bench: Judge John
Futch.
Futch has decided to retire after 24 years on the bench and a
40-year career in law.
Assistant State Attorney Tommy Thompson and
Assistant Public Defender LeAnn Mackey Barnes hope they can live up to Futch's
firm-but-fair reputation on the bench.
The attorneys think they can
bring their own flair, but still hold onto Futch's core values.
The two
candidates are vying for what's known as the Group 3 county judge seat.Bonding

be on the Aug. 14 primary ballot.
Judicial elections are nonpartisan, so

Barnes said.
Both attorneys have practiced and were nurtured in Futch's
courtroom; that gave them plenty of trial experience. They have law degrees from
the University of Florida and a vested interest in the Marion County community.
Barnes has never been a prosecutor. For much of her career, spanning

She also has civil law
experience, litigating Baker Act and Marchman Act cases and domestic relations
cases.
Thompson has been a prosecutor at the State Attorney's Office for
more than eight years and has never been a full-time criminal defense attorney.
He had a brief stint as a civil attorney and did some medical malpractice work
